Resources for Fishers
In August 2024, FisherFolkFirst produced a 12-minute video summarising the fishing regulations in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) and explaining the ecological reasons behind them. While celebrating that the TCI is still blessed with marine resources that many neighbouring countries have lost, the video explains why we need certain regulations to ensure that local fisheries can continue to provide good livelihoods for future generations. To cater to all demographics of fisherfolk in the TCI, separate English, Spanish, and Creole versions of the video have been produced and are hosted on YouTube. Members of the fishing community assisted with translating the script and with narration, and commercial fishers helped to get the shots needed for the video.

In March 2024, FisherFolkFirst provided a leaflet of fishing regulations of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). The leaflet provides a summary of the most pertinent regulations in English, Spanish and Creole, with illustrations designed to cater to people with challenges with literacy. The initiative is an output from the Darwin funded project ‘Developing biodiversity stewardship among TCI fishers through outreach and education’.
In March 2024, as a complement to the leaflet (see above), FisherFolkFirst launched a website with a summary of the fishing regulations of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). The website provides a summary of the most pertinent regulations in English, Spanish and Creole, with illustrations designed to cater to people with challenges with literacy. The initiative is an output from the Darwin funded project ‘Developing biodiversity stewardship among TCI fishers through outreach and education’.
In August 2023, FisherFolkFirst provided minimum size lobster gauges for all commercial fishers and fisheries officers in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). This initiative was undertaken at the request of local fishers and in partnership with the TCI Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources Management. Provision of the lobster gauges is the first output from the Darwin funded project ‘Developing biodiversity stewardship among TCI fishers through outreach and education’.
